There are some careers that, in order to be successful, you need to follow a tried and true path. Master jeweler is not one of those careers, and Joe Thacker, founder owner and president of Thacker Jewelry in Lubbock, Texas, is a perfect example of that. His varied background and technical proficiency along with his passion for jewelry is why his two jewelry stores are the first choice for northwest Texas when it comes to diamond engagement rings, wedding bands and other bridal jewelry, as well as loose diamonds.
Graduating with both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering, it might have seemed like selling diamond rings would be the last thing that Joe Thacker would ever end up doing. His passion for life and exploring what the world had to offer took him to New Mexico not long after graduating. It was there that he fell in love with the jewelry of Native Americans and began working with them to produce jewelry to be sold across the nation. Successful enough by 1977 to sell his business, he did what anybody would do in that situation: he bought a boat and sailed around the world. Eighteen months later, he found himself back home in Roaring Springs, still with a passion for creating fine jewelry. He opened his first shop, specializing in diamond bracelets, diamond necklaces and diamond earrings.
Word of his love of the business and the amazing customer service that he and his staff were known for with soon spread and people were driving from as far away as Dallas and Albuquerque to see the beautiful jewelry he was creating. Business was so good, that by 1983 the second of his jewelry stores was opened, this time in nearby Lubbock.
Today, both stores continue to be the most sought after locations for fine jewelry. Joe Thacker attributes that to the Christian beliefs and family values that each member of his staff shares.
